Reinventing the Steel was released on March 21, 2000, twenty years ago, and the music and the memory live on stronger than ever today.  By all accounts, the album marked a renewed creative spark and sense of brotherhood within the group. "I felt like things had turned a corner," Vinnie Paul recalled to Revolver. "We kind of wanted to go back and really grab some of those things that people liked the most about Vulgar and Cowboys [From Hell], and Phil's exact words were that he wanted to make a record that was 'more anthemic,' lyrically."
That impulse played out in the anthem "Goddamn Electric," Pantera's love song to heavy metal, and as such, it gives a much deserved salute to the band's own favorite groups Black Sabbath and Slayer. "Phil was calling out all these bands that stuck true to their guns," Dimebag explained to Guitar World in 2000. "They're our kind of guys." Incredibly, Kerry King from Slayer laid down a solo almost immediately after walking offstage following Slayer's set at Ozzfest.
"The first thing Kerry played was awesome," said Dimebag. "You can hear me at the end of the take yelling, 'Don't touch that! Fuck, that's hot!' He recorded it right there on the spot, backstage at Starplex in Dallas, in a bathroom. Kerry packed his shit up and fuckin' flew somewhere else and jammed some more."
When Phil Anselmo belts out the words “your trust is in whisky, weed, and Black Sabbath” in “Goddamn Electric,” it hits hard every time. We're really honored to be able to release prints by Matt Ryan Tobin commemorating this album, and this song in particular.
"This song explodes. The moment I first heard it, so did my head. I interpret this song being about finding salvation in music and happiness in the little things. At the end of the day, regardless what the world throws at you - you always have whiskey, weed…and Pantera." - Matt Ryan Tobin
