Pantera spent the summer of 2001 storming arenas across North America with Slayer in support of its latest album, Reinventing the Steel. On Aug. 26, 2001, Pantera made it to Yokohama for the Beast Feast festival, sharing a bill with Slayer, Sepultura, Machine Head, Biohazard and several other bands.
They soldiered through an 11-song set that included classics such as "Cowboys From Hell," "Mouth for War," "5 Minutes Alone" and "Walk." Slayer's Kerry King joined the band for "F----- Hostile," and Biohazard singer Evan Seinfeld lent his talents during an encore performance of "Walk." Unfortunately, the rest of the tour was cancelled due to the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks, and Pantera would never perform again.
We are commemorating the 20th anniversary of the final concert of one of metal's greatest bands with a stunning poster full of Pantera reference, illustrated by artist and Pantera super-fan Luke Preece:
"When I first heard Pantera I was around 12yrs old. A friend at school turned me onto them by lending me Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display of Power on cassette - the latter being the latest release at the time. The main thing that pulled me in was the relentless riffs from Dimebag and that signature groove of the rhythm section from Rex and Vinnie. Phil’s vocals were so raw and pissed off too. That combined with the weight of Terry Date's production made them an unstoppable force. I’d found my new favourite band and I could not get enough of them. After that came Far Beyond Driven and so on… which was such a great album. And as much as I love all of the records - Vulgar Display Of Power will always be my favourite. It was the one that REALLY got me into them and to this day still sounds crushing.
When creating the artwork I wanted to take elements and themes from throughout their career and combine them in an interesting way. As this was the final show the band would ever play - I wanted the art to be a celebration of the achievements and legacy. It’s sad to think that Dime and Vinnie aren’t around to witness my efforts with this artwork but I’d like to think that maybe they’d appreciate that I am a genuine fan of the band. The metal world would be a very different place without Pantera. Because, as much as other bands try to imitate, Pantera will always be... STRONGER THAN ALL."
