We're celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Who’s Who’s Next with an officially licensed, limited edition print by Ames Bros!
After the release of Tommy and their triumphant performance at Woodstock, one had to wonder what The Who would do next for an encore. That encore was Who's Next, which is regarded by many as the best album in their catalog. Sandwiched in between opener “Baba O’Riley” and closing track “Won’t Get Fooled Again” are songs of exquisite beauty that touch a place that very few songwriters can reach.
Even though the original album cover (for which this print is based on) does not suggest it, this was their grown-up album and still stands as one of their crowning achievements. To create a limited edition screenprint for this iconic album on its 50th anniversary, we asked Ames Bros to continue their amazing line of Who artwork for us:
What do you get someone for their 50th anniversary? GOLD.
Arguably the greatest album of all time turns 50 and still holds up.. big time. The track list is absolutely bulletproof. And the album art has everything I want and need in album art… a sense of danger and a f**k-you-if-you-don’t-get-it attitude. Something your mother might throw in the trash if she ever found it. Pure rock-n-roll.
Working on this poster was a bit intimidating and I felt like I had a 5-ton monolith strapped to my back the whole time… but only because I wanted to do the music a little justice. Rather than recreate the album art, as is… I wanted to move forward/back in time and create a little snap-short of another moment somewhere between now and then.
Super excited about how things turned out and honored to be a part of something, so timeless, a half century later. - Barry Ament
